Marlaina Auger, P.Eng.

Marlaina is a Senior Principal Engineer based in Ontario with more than 20 years of experience focusing on remediating soil and groundwater and managing large multidisciplinary teams to address complex projects.

On behalf of clients, Marlaina navigates regulatory compliance, permitting, and stakeholder interest group negotiations, while managing project metrics for successful attainment of project goals and schedule, and control of project costs. She conducts investigations and feasibility study assessment, selects and designs remedies, and oversees contracting and implementation for the successful remediation of contaminated sites. She has successfully managed or provided engineering design for projects throughout Canada, the United States, and Germany.

In her remediation work, Marlaina focuses on contaminated soil and groundwater. This work often includes process-flow modeling, hydraulic calculations, heat and material balances, engineering design packages, and equipment sizing, specification, and selection. She is an effective manager and communicator, leading teams as they prepare bid packages, cost estimates, and schedules to meet project goals while controlling costs.

To meet her clients’ needs, she often employs innovative, first-to-field technologies. These include in situ chemical oxidization and enhanced in situ bioremediation recirculation systems to treat chlorinated solvents and other contaminants. She has implemented these technologies combined with electrokinetics to evenly distribute amendments in low permeability soil. Her remediation system project experience also includes applying self-sustaining smoldering combustion (STAR technology) to remediate coal tar, as well as implementing conventional remediation technologies including excavation, groundwater extraction and treatment with biological enhancement, soil vapor extraction, and multiphase extraction systems.
