David Major, Ph.D., BCES

David is a Senior Consultant based in Ontario with more than 30 years of experience focused on negotiating, managing and directing the development and deployment of cost-effective remediation strategies and technologies for challenging contaminated sites associated with Fortune 500 companies.

A pioneer in remediation technologies, Dave contributed to the development, demonstration, and application of monitored natural attenuation (MNA), enhanced in situ bioremediation (EISB), and zero-valent iron (ZVI) permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), and leading the first full-scale ZVI PRB installation. He has also helped commercialize important solutions: the application of biomarkers (PLFA), bioaugmentation solutions for the in-situ biodegradation of chlorinated solvents, and STAR technology, a smouldering-based combustion technology to treat heavy hydrocarbons like creosotes and coal tars. Dave is also the Principal Investigator for a U.S. Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) project to demonstrate the application of STAR to treat PFAS compounds in soil and spent activated carbon.

Dave has served on national scientific and regulatory advisory boards including the U.S. EPA Expert Panel on partial source treatment of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), and on the U.S. National Research Council Committee on Geological and Geotechnical Engineering in the New Millennium. The Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council's (ITRC) has recognized his contribution to the ITRC through several awards. Dave is also the author or co-author of over 50 peer-reviewed technical publications on environmental remediation topics, and over 45 conference publications, presentations, and posters. He has received several awards including: University of Waterloo Faculty of Science Alumni of Honour Award (2007); Space Hall of Fame® (2007); ASTM C.A. Hogentogler Award (2015) and ICE Telford Premium (2016) awards. Dave also led the Savron/Geosyntec project team receiving the Superior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) in 2017 for "The Evolution of STAR from Laboratory Concept to Full-Scale In-Situ Implementation" and the 2018, AAEES Grand Prize - Industrial Waste Practice award and W. Wesley Eckenfelder Industrial Waste Management Medal for the "Pilot to Full Scale: Development of STARx HottPad™." Dave has led efforts between Geosyntec and the University of Toronto, and Savron and University of Western Ontario, recognized for national excellence in sustained and innovative academic-industrial collaboration with the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada Synergy Award in 2009 and 2018. He also is an Associate Editor for Ground Water Monitoring and Remediation.
