Ali Nasseri-Moghaddam, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Ali is a Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer based in Ontario with more than 25 years of professional experience in the areas of geotechnical, dam, and structural engineering. His expertise includes dam engineering, earthquake engineering, risk management for underground structures, slope stability assessment, geotechnical design of tunneling works, and application of geophysics in geotechnical engineering.

Ali has led multidisciplinary projects for his clients including geotechnical investigation, foundation design and construction quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) for major infrastructure, wind farms, mine sites, and landfills. His projects have included the assessment of dynamic properties of subsurface soil layers, geophysical investigations, detail settlement and bearing capacity evaluations, and the design of massive raft foundations for wind turbines.

He has played key roles assisting clients in completing dam safety assessments, geotechnical evaluations and stability/seepage analysis, seismic settlement assessment and failure mode analysis, audit inspections, and mine closure cost estimates for dams and water/tailing retaining structures.

To advance the state of practice, Ali has promoted the use of the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method to assess soil dynamic properties, characterize subsurface soil and rock properties, and locate underground cavities and fault/joint locations within rock formations. Based on field experiments, he developed a method to enhance the quality of geophysical field data entitled Multi Geometry Approach for MASW Survey (Nasseri-Moghaddam and Park, 2010).

Ali serves as the Chair of the Canadian Geotechnical Society (Southern Ontario Section), is an active member of the Canadian Dam Association, and is a member of the Canadian Association of Earthquake Engineering. He has also been a lecturer at the University of Waterloo where he taught undergraduate and graduate level courses including Advanced Soil Testing in Geotechnical Engineering. As an invited speaker, he regularly shares the results of his works and experiences at universities and workshops. He also publishes the results of his works in conferences and refereed journal papers.
